Tachograph analysis is essential for all fleet managers to help them stay compliant, and keep on top of tachograph regulations and driving hours’ rules. But with so much data that can be analysed from the tacho, it can be easy to get overwhelmed, and lose focus on the information that matters.

So, what is tachograph analysis and why is it needed?

Tachograph analysis simply put is analysing the data that comes from the tachograph unit in a vehicle, and there are two ways of getting the data from a digital tachograph. Firstly from the driver card, which legally needs to be downloaded and analysed at least every 28 days, and secondly is the vehicle data, which legally needs to be downloaded at least every 90 days.

Analysing the data from the tachograph is important to show that driving hours’ laws and tachograph compliance is being met, and when it isn’t, operators are made aware of this, so that they can rectify any issues that may be occurring, for example driving for too long, or driving without the required amount of breaks.

Analogue tachograph analysis vs digital tachograph analysis.

Whilst digital tachographs are the norm, have become a legal requirement in new vehicles since May 2006, there are still a large number of vehicles which use analogue charts. The main benefit of still using analogue charts is that driver data can be read straight from the chart, however, drivers’ have to manually keep track of their breaks and driving times. Charts can then be electronically scanned into a computer for further analysis, but are not as accurate as digital tachographs due to physical marks that may appear on the tachograph charts, which could lead to errors.

With digital tachographs, data is more precise, and more secure with data encryption, meaning that the data cannot be tampered with or destroyed. The big benefit of having digital tachographs is that any infringements or potential issues can be easily detected with tachograph analysis software, therefore saving transport operators precious time.
